Roman Polanski

Born in Paris in 1933, Roman Polanski was raised and educated in Poland where he attended Art School in Cracow and the famed State Film College in Lodz. Having made his stage acting debut at fourteen, he continued to perform on the popular radio show "The Merry Gang." In his early 20's he appeared in Andrzej Wajda's acclaimed film, "A Generation" (1954) as well as in Wajda's "Lotna," "Innocent Sorcerers" and "Samson," before leaving Poland.

In 1958, Polanski directed the highly acclaimed short film "Two Men and a Wardrobe," and made three other short films that brought him attention as an important new film stylist: "When Angels Fall" "The Fat and the Lean" and "The Mammals." But it was Polanski's feature film debut with the 1962 thriller "Knife in the Water" that catapulted him to international fame. Winner of the Critics Prize at the Venice Film Festival, "Knife in the Water" was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film and was featured on the cover of Time magazine.

He made his English-language debut with "Repulsion" (1964), starring Catherine Deneuve, and then made "Cul-de-Sac" (1965), which won Polanski the Best Picture prize at the Berlin Film Festival. His next film, "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (aka "The Dance of the Vampires") also presented Polanski in a starring role.

Polanski marked his American directorial debut with the horror classic "Rosemary's Baby" (1968), for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay Adaptation. In 1972, Polanski returned to Europe to direct his adaptation (co-written with Kenneth Tynan) of Shakespeare's "Macbeth," and in 1973 he directed Marcello Mastroianni in the absurdist comedy "What?" 1974 marked Polanski's return to Hollywood with "Chinatown," Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, and nominated for eleven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

Though proven a master of such quintessentially American genres as the detective yarn and the supernatural thriller, Polanski returned to Europe for the 1976 film "The Tenant." In addition to directing, he played the starring role (having previously acted in "The Fearless Vampire Killers," "What?" and "Chinatown") and co-wrote the script. Working exclusively in Europe since 1977, Polanski next filmed "Tess" (1979), for which Polanski received an Academy Award nomination as Best Director and which also won Oscars for Cinematography, Art Direction and Costume Design.

In 1986 he filmed the adventure spoof "Pirates" which was Oscar-nominated for Best Costume Design. Polanski's next film, the 1988 thriller "Frantic," with Harrison Ford, marked the first starring role of Emmanuelle Seigner, who starred with Peter Coyote and Hugh Grant in his 1992 film "Bitter Moon." Seigner married Polanski in 1989.

On stage, Polanski has directed productions of Berg's "Lulu" at Spoleto, Verdi's "Rigoletto" at the Munich Opera and, most recently, "Tales of Hoffman" in Paris. In 1981 he directed and starred in the Warsaw production of Peter Shaffer's "Amadeus," which he then triumphantly brought to Paris in 1982. In 1988 he created the lead role in Stephen Berkoff's stage adaptation of Kafka's "Metamorphosis," also on the Paris stage.

In addition to "A Pure Formality," and his roles in his own films, Polanski's other acting assignments include "The Magic Christian," "Andy Warhol's Dracula," "Back in the USSR" and "Grosse Fatigue." In 1984 Polanski wrote his autobiography, Roman, which was a bestseller in several languages. His latest feature as director is the film adaptation of Ariel Dorfman's acclaimed play "Death and the Maiden," starring Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley and Stuart Wilson.

Style

Most of Polanski's films are intelligent psychological suspense thrillers, notable for their deliberate pacing, carefully established mood and atmosphere, and faintly Gothic treatment of settings and characters. As a stylist, Polanski favors long takes, deep-focus photography, and detailed pictorial mise-en-scène; jump cuts and montage very rarely appear in his work.

A recurring theme in his work is the relationship between victim and predator, and the unstable and shifting dynamics of power relations between characters often lead to sudden outbursts of absurd and grotesque violence (e.g., Cul-de-Sac, Macbeth, Chinatown, Bitter Moon, Death and the Maiden). Many of Polanski's films (especially his early works) deal with characters stuggling for mastery over a hopeless situation and feature a circular plot structure — i.e., the action is framed by a bitterly ironic recurrence of events or reversal of fortunes at the end. As for Polanski's ability to evince profound and moving drama from apparently sensational or trivial themes, Death and the Maiden star Stuart Wilson said of the director, "Roman is very deep water pretending [to be] shallow water".

Antonia Bernath goes to Bollywood

British actress Antonia Bernath is making her debut in Kisna - the Warrior Poet, marking a growing trend for non-Indian stars to appear in Bollywood films.

Directed by Bollywood veteran Subhash Ghai, the film is set in the British Raj and Bernath plays an army general's daughter who falls in love with a rural boy, Kisna.

"I liked the fluid nature of film-making. We improvised quite a lot," says Bernath. "At times it felt very chaotic but Mr Ghai was quite clear about what he wanted."

Picked from more than 200 girls in an audition in London, Bernath cut short her education at Bristol's Old Vic Theatre School to take up the opportunity.

It is not often that somebody gets to play the lead role straight out of a drama school. She spent three weeks learning Hindi and taking dance lessons.

"Initially, I was a bit sceptical about how people would respond to me," Bernath says. "But I found the Hindi film industry very warm and encouraging. I even had a few offers before the work on Kisna was completed."

Overseas market

Films are one of India's biggest exports and those like Lagaan and Monsoon Wedding have broken the traditional boundaries of colour and culture.

Spurred by this, Bollywood producers are trying to go global in all aspects of film-making, be it technical or artistic.

Angry Moroccan script writers calling his Majesty the King Mohammed the Sixth

Moroccan screenwriters are having harsh times to get their scenarios and scripts proved and admitted by commission of reading either from CCM , Soriad 2M and National TV (First channel) .

Other major problems emerge by deceiving these writers to worry and anger like delaying approval by these commissions, besides there are artistic interruptions such as cutting out long dialogues and some uninterested characters swept out by directors .These modifications sometimes make screenwriters sad, because they think that directors kill their craft as to change , pace and rythm of the scripts, says Mohammad Twirtou and Abbass Fouraq.

Too many artists prepare a draft to write to his majesty the king Mohammed the sixth in order to take measures of these so called unjust commissions in the world of Sound and Vision . Other screenwriters already considered as Personna Non Grata such as Abderhaman Moline ,Aziz Mawhoub, Hassan Semlali and Allal El Alaoui ( see His remake of Thelma and Louis called Zoubida and Zoulikha deposed in 2M two years ago and buried also at Production Department In SNRT.

.This remake is a first experience and admitted fervently by some directors and cinemagoers such as Abdelhay Iraki ,Mustapha Hayran and even Suane Sarandon herself who has a copy of the script handled to her when she was in Marrakech .However,These people prefer to wait , may be that HACA would come out of its silence and deep sleep, otherwise they might join others for a peaceful artistic manifestation that would come very soon in Rabat before the seventh edition of International film festival in Marrakech that is held on the 7th of december, 2007 .

a bas les critiques minables

Marwane

James David Graham Niven was born in London, England, the son of William Edward Graham Niven and French/British Henrietta Julia Degacher, born in Wales, the daughter of army officer William Degacher (who changed his original name of Hitchcock to his mother's maiden name of Degacher in 1874 [3]) and Julia Caroline, the daughter of Lieutenant General James Webber Smith[4]. He was named David for his birth on St. David's Day. Although he often used to claim that he was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland it was only after his birth certificate was checked after his death that this was found to be incorrect. [5]

His father was killed during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 and his mother remarried Sir Thomas Comyn-Platt. In his biography, NIV: The Authorized Biography of David Niven, Graham Lord suggests that Comyn-Platt had actually been conducting an affair with Niven's mother for some time prior to her husband's death, and that Sir Thomas may well have been Niven's biological father, a supposition not without some support from her children, it seems.

Satyajit Ray, the exquisite Indian filmmaker.

Sajayit Ray help·info)) (May 2, 1921–April 23, 1992) was an Indian filmmaker regarded as one of the greatest film directors of the twentieth century.[1] Born in the city of Kolkata (then Calcutta) into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and letters, Ray studied at Presidency College and at the Visva-Bharati University, at the poet Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing the Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves during a visit to London.

Ray directed thirty-seven films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. Ray's first film, Pather Panchali, won eleven international prizes, including Best Human Document at Cannes. Along with Aparajito and Apur Sansar, the film forms the Apu trilogy. Ray worked on an array of tasks, including scripting, casting, scoring, cinematography, art direction, editing and designing his own credit titles and publicity material. Apart from making films, he was a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, graphic designer and film critic. Ray received many major awards in his career, including an Academy Honorary Award in 1992.

New directions (1965–1982)

In the post-Charulata period, Ray took on projects of increasing variety, ranging from fantasy to science fiction to detective films to historical drama. Ray also made considerable formal experimentation during this period, and also took closer notice to the contemporary issues of Indian life, responding to a perceived lack of these issues in his films. The first major film in this period is Nayak (The Hero), the story of a screen hero traveling in a train where he meets a young sympathetic female journalist. Starring Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore, the film explores, in the twenty-four hours of the journey, the inner conflict of the apparently highly successful matinée idol. In spite of receiving a Critics prize in Berlin, the reaction to this film was generally muted.[25]

In 1967, Ray wrote a script for a film to be called The Alien, based on his short story Bankubabur Bandhu ("Banku Babu's Friend") which he wrote in 1962 for Sandesh, the Ray family magazine. The Alien had Columbia Pictures as producer for this planned U.S.-India co-production, and Peter Sellers and Marlon Brando as the leading actors. However, Ray was surprised to find that the script he had written had already been copyrighted and the fee appropriated. Brando later dropped out of the project, and though an attempt was made to replace him with James Coburn, Ray became disillusioned and returned to Kolkata.[26][27] Columbia expressed interest in reviving the project several times in the 1970s and 1980s, but nothing came of it. When E.T. was released in 1982, Ray saw similarities in the film to his earlier script — Ray discussed the collapse of the project in a 1980 Sight & Sound feature, with further details revealed by Ray's biographer Andrew Robinson (in The Inner Eye, 1989). Ray believed that Spielberg's film would not have been possible without his script of The Alien being available throughout America in mimeographed copies (a charge Spielberg denies).[28]

In 1969, Ray made what would be commercially the most successful of his films. Based on a children's story written by his grandfather, Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (The Adventures of Goopy and Bagha) is a musical fantasy. Goopy the singer and Bagha the drummer, equipped by three boons allowed by the King of Ghosts, set out on a fantastic journey in which they try to stop an impending war between two neighbouring kingdoms. Among his most expensive enterprises, it turned out to be very hard to finance; Ray abandoned his desire to shoot it in colour, turning down an offer that would have forced him to cast a certain Bollywood actor as the lead.[29] Ray next made a film from a novel by the young poet and writer, Sunil Gangopadhyay. Featuring a musical structure acclaimed as even more complex than Charulata,[30] Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) traces four urban young men going to the forests for a vacation, trying to leave their petty urban existence behind. All but one of them get engaged into revealing encounters with women, which critics consider a revealing study of the Indian middle class. Ray cast Mumbai-based actress Simi Garewal as a tribal woman, who was pleasantly surprised to find that Ray could envision someone as urban as her in that role.

After Aranyer, Ray made a foray into contemporary Bengali reality, which was then in state of continuous flux due to the leftist Naxalite movement. He completed the so-called Calcutta trilogy: Pratidwandi (1970), Seemabaddha (1971), and Jana Aranya (1975), three films which were conceived separately, but whose thematic connections form a loose trilogy. Pratidwandi (The Adversary) is about an idealist young graduate; if disillusioned, still uncorrupted at the end of film, Jana Aranya (The Middleman) about how a young man gives in to the culture of corruption to make a living, and Seemabaddha (Company Limited) about an already successful man giving up morals for further gains. Of these, the first, Pratidwandi, uses an elliptical narrative style previously unseen in Ray films, such as scenes in negative, dream sequences and abrupt flashbacks. In the 1970s, Ray also adapted two of his popular stories as detective films. Though mainly targeted towards children and young adults, both Sonar Kella (The Golden Fortress) and Joy Baba Felunath (The Elephant God) found some critical following.[31]

Ray considered making a film on the Bangladesh Liberation War but later abandoned the idea, commenting that as a filmmaker he was more interested in the travails and journeys of the refugees and not politics.[32] In 1977, Ray completed Shatranj Ke Khiladi (The Chess Players), an Urdu film based on a story by Munshi Premchand, set in Lucknow in the state of Oudh, a year before the Indian rebellion of 1857. A commentary on the circumstances that led to the colonization of India by the British, this was Ray's first feature film in a language other than Bengali. This is also his most expensive and star-studded film, featuring likes of Sanjeev Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Amjad Khan, Shabana Azmi, Victor Bannerjee and Richard Attenborough. Ray made a sequel to Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne in 1980, a somewhat overtly political Hirak Rajar Deshe (Kingdom of Diamonds) — where the kingdom of the evil Diamond King or Hirok Raj is an allusion to India during Indira Gandhi's emergency period.[33] Along with his acclaimed short film Pikoo (Pikoo's Day) and hour long Hindi film Sadgati this was the culmination of his work in this period.(Wikipedia)
